An Introduction to EK

Hey y'all! My name is Emma Kemp, or EK for short (even though my name is already short... just go with it). I am a junior here at OU studying Psychology with a minor in HR. This major is relatively new for me, as I had a quarter-life crisis last fall and changed my whole five year plan.

Coming in as a freshman, I was majoring in HES with a focus on preparing for Occupational Therapy graduate school. This had been my dream for a few years, but the more psychology courses I took and the more organizations I got involved in, I couldn't deny my passion for team development and individual growth; opening my mind up to new possibilities of what this five year plan looked like. If you couldn't tell by this, I like to have a plan when it comes to my future. I never want to feel like I have zero direction or that I'm behind in the game of life, so getting that doubting feeling about something I had wanted for so long terrified me. However, I think that fear and confusion was the kick in the butt I needed to realize it's okay to question your motives and to prove to myself how much will-power I had. As I am no longer an HES major, it's obvious that I didn't give in to this fear and instead went with my heart and made the change. One semester in and I am loving every minute of it.

Being a Psychology major, I have a new found appreciation for personality tests. I know that there's a certain stigma with tests such as Meyers-Briggs, Enneagram, or what have you, but personally I think there's a lot of truth to them if you use them in the correct way. Using a personality test to excuse a certain behavior or point out anything negative in another individual is not the purpose of tests such as these, nor is it respectful in any way. Personality tests are created so that people can feel more connected to themselves, as well as be more aware of the differences everyone possesses. Using tests like these from a professional standpoint can also help in the workplace. Not for job placement or testing someone's qualifications, but instead using it to help develop an individuals gifts and skills to their full potential. We are all capable of amazing things, and understanding how to help someone achieve those amazing things is incredibly beneficial. If you are a fan of either of these tests or another one I didn't mention, I would absolutely love to talk about it and hear your thoughts! I am an ENFJ on Meyers-Briggs and a 2w3 on the Enneagram, so take from that what you will!

Outside of school, I like to just hang out and relax. Quarantine brought out the retired high school athlete in me and gave me a new found love for fitness, but we'll see how long that lasts during the school year. After a long day of online classes, I like to watch trashy reality TV, such as Love Island, Big Brother, and any of the Real Housewives franchise (but New Jersey is my personal favorite). As far as music goes, I'll kinda listen to anything besides heavy metal or scream-o. My favorite genres though are alternative, indie pop, and hip-hop; and of course, Harry Styles - he deserves his own genre.

Anyways, that's probably a good enough introduction to me! Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Hi Emma!

Your blog is so very cute and I'm obsessed.

Like you, quarantine has also brought out the fitness side in me and I am glad I am not the only one! But what really caught my attention was that YOU WATCH BIG BROTHER!!! I love that show so much and I do not know very many people who watch it!

How are you liking this season? Who is your favorite All-Star?

Looking forward to learning and reading more about you!

  2. Hi Emma!

I'm also a psych major and I absolutely fell in love with it too! I like to think there's a little it of truth to personality tests. Sure, they may be catered to a wide range of traits just so they're relatable to everyone, but they have to be rooted in something, right? I'm also the type that thinks way ahead and likes to have a plan, so it must have been hard to change your major and path like that. Regardless, I'm glad you found what you're passionate about!

  4. Hi Emma!

I'm so glad that you found your passion in Psychology courses! The same thing happened with me when I decided to become an English major so it's awesome to see someone else who found something they really love as well.

As to the personality test thing, I am an ENTP on Meyers-Brigg, but unsure what I am on Enneagram since I've never heard of it. I'll definitely go and check it out now though since I love anything that gives me an insight into personality and behavior.

It's not really the same thing as a personality test since it's not scientific but I am super into astrology and zodiac signs. If you like personality stuff like I do, you should really check it out and start researching things like your moon and rising sign, if you haven't already because I think you would really enjoy it. I would love to know what your sun sign is if you know it!

Finally, Harry Styles is THE MAN! I love his song "Woman". It's sooo good!

    Have a great day Emma!

  5. You don't have to persuade me about the power of working on team development and individual growth, Emma; reading up on the psychology and HR literature on growth has helped me so much in developing these classes, and that is a field where you will have so many job opportunities going forward for sure. Challenges and growth is what the future is going to be about, more than ever. And you might even design your project for this class around the MBTI or Enneagram... I'm not sure about the science of them (I read a great book about that by Brian Little: Me, Myself, and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being link), but for storytelling purposes they are so cool, helping you to explore the personalities of your characters as if they were real people! Plus that would be a cool way for people in class to learn about the tests and how they work... and you might want to learn about older practices like Tarot, which are not exactly personality tests, but I think in some ways it might have served some of the same purposes. Tarot at Wikipedia. Fun stuff, and beautiful art too! :-)

  6. Hi Emma!

It's good to hear that you found a major that you're passionate about, even if you had to change it part of the way through. Whatever you graduate in can dictate what your career is for the rest of your life, so you should work to find what you're passionate in! But also, I'm obsessed with Big Brother! I've watched almost every season (even the current All-Star one, despite most of the HouseGuests getting on my last nerve). You're the third or fourth person I've seen in this class who loves it just like me. Maybe we need to start a GroupMe or schedule some Zoom meetings so we can watch together!

  7. Hi Emma! I'm also a psychology major, and I absolutely love it! I'm glad you made the switch, I think you'll really like it. If you haven't taken all of your degree specific classes yet, I highly recommend social psychology and abnormal psych, I haven't finished all of mine yet but those have been my favorites so far!

  8. Hey Emma, I think we should totally be friends based on what I just read about you I am a big fan of all the music you listed ESPECIALLY Harry Styles. I've loved that man since the One Direction days. I also ended up changing my major from HES to something I was more passionate about. I found I'm doing so much better in my new major because I am learning about things I actually enjoy. I hope it's the same for you!

  9. Hi Emma! That is awesome that you were able to identify your passions in college. It seems like you have great intentions for your major switch and you will do great things! I feel you on the quarantine fitness wave, though it has been harder as classes have gotten busier. Just recently Watermelon Sugar has been hitting the spot so I'm sure you'll love to hear that! Have a great semester!

  10. Hey Emma, I'm glad you were able to figure out your quarter-life crisis, and come out doing something you're passionate in! I feel like I have a quarter-life crisis once a week, so I definitely get where you're coming from. At the end of the day though, it's always best to just do what you want to do, and have fun with it.

  11. Hi, Emma! Congrats on making the choice to follow your heart and change your major. I went through a similar experience and switched majors after my first semester. I understand how hard that decision can be. I'm glad that you're loving it so far. Hopefully you continue and get everything you hope for out of it. Your love of personality tests is interesting. I'm someone who thinks they're a bit bogus, but you're explanation of why you like them has shined a new light on them that's pretty interesting.

  12. Hi Emma! I love that you found your passion. I am a psychology major who is pursuing occupational therapy. But, I completely agree that some courses inspire me to completely turn around and study them for life. Personally, mine is always social psychology and group interactions. I think it is really amazing that professors have had the opportunity to inspire you and now you can do what you love for life!! I adore personality tests also. I think the scientific ones are important to learn about yourself, but I am a huge fan of the random and not at all helpful quizzes!

  13. Hi Emma!
I am so happy to read your intro, looks like you found your passion. It must be fun being in a psychology major because you can easily understand someone or understand why they behave the way they do. I have seen personality test only in movies. I love to watch too the real housewives and love island. I guess we got some tv show and movies in common. It was pleasure reading you.

  14. Hello Emma,
I completely understand and agree with planning out your life. I am the same way. It's tough when life comes and smashes all your expectations. I have found myself listening more and more to indie pop. Who's your favorite indie artist? And yas! Harry Styles is great. I have really enjoyed his sole music, especially the song Sweet Creature and Kiwi from his album Harry Styles.

  15. Hi Emma,

I am a psychology major too!! That is very interesting that you like personality tests. I love to hang out and relax. I wish I also had a love for fitness too. That is one thing that I am hoping to find a passion in. I love Harry Styles too. I have a big poster of him in my apartment.

  16. Hi EK,

I'm happy that you were able to change your plan and find something you're passionate about. I find it a bit weird that everyone feels like they have to have a set plan/dream after high school. College is for exploration, and plans can change. Do you have links so that we can do our personality tests? I've done both of those before, but I can only ever remember my star sign information lol. Best of luck with the semester! p.s Fine line is my life source right now. Go Harry.

  17. Hi Emma,
Psychology is a really cool major! I think people could learn many interesting knowledge and facts from their courses. I also have a friend whose major is also psychology, she always say that she loves this field. Also, it is so good to you could set plans in your life. Keep it up!

  18. Emma, nice to meet you! I totally get what you mean about always needing to have a plan. I'm usually the same way. I came into college with a 5 year plan, and ended up changing it a bit. I know how hard that can be, and I'm proud of you for following your heart and making the switch. I'm sure it's going to pay off big time. I totally agree with what you said about personality tests. People can take them too seriously or make fun of them, but I think they can be helpful! I'm an 8w7 and reading about the enneagram really helped me understand myself better, or at least helped me talk about it with other people. It was also a fun way to talk about personality differences with my friends. I'm also a huge Harry Styles fan - have you gotten to watch his new music video for "Golden"? It's pretty good. Good luck with the rest of this class!

  19. Hi Emma! First of all, I am also a 2 on the enneagram, but my wing is a 1, but we're still similar! Second, I also went through a crisis where I switched majors and even transferred schools the year before I was supposed to graduate, so you're not alone in that. You sound like you're really passionate about the field that you're going into and I wish you the best of luck!

  20. Hi Emma!
I was once a psych major and I am glad that you found something that you are truly passionate about. I switched to a planned program to better prepare me for medical school but I loved my psych classes and made sure to continue to take them. I also think that it is so awesome that you got back into fitness.

  21. Hello Emma, I am also the type of person to always have a plan and I live by my planner. I also had a pretty set plan coming into college but freshman year definitely threw me for a loop, but I was able not to stray too far from my original plan so that good! I’m glad you have found something you are so passionate about and wish you luck on your future!
