Reading Notes: English Fairy Tales, Part B

(Found on Pixababy, represents fox in the story)

Reading notes for "Johnny-Cake" from English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs (1890).

This story is a classic fairy tale, with the elements of child-like stories but with content that is somewhat dark. The story starts with the making of Johnny-Cake by an old woman, as Johnny-Cake escapes the house. He ran down the hill so fast that he out ran the old woman, old man, and son that lived in the house he was made in. He kept running and running, passing by multiple people and animals on his way down.

Johnny-cake out ran two well-diggers, two ditch-diggers, a bear, and a wolf. Every time he approached these new challengers, he would brag about how quickly he outran the previous opponent. Johnny-Cake was confident, to say the least, so when he approached a fox, he was ready for another race.

As Johnny-Cake got closer to the fox, he yelled about his past opponents and how slow they were, and immediately challenged the fox. The fox tricked Johnny-Cake into thinking he couldn't hear him, and got him close enough to eat him all up. While Jonny-Cake thought he was this big hot shot, the fox outsmarted him, and it resulted in Johnny-Cake's end.

I really enjoyed this story because I thought it was such a fun and easy read with such an interesting story line. While reading it, I continually was thinking of ways I could make the story my own, so I am really excited to work on my story for it!
